The short version: we collect what we need to run Bemis, we don't sell your data, and your reading life isn't an advertising product.
What we collect
Account: your email address and display name.
Reading data: your shelves, reading progress, clubs, and your conversations with Bemis — this is the product working, not surveillance.
Payments: handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card number — only your subscription status.
Voice: if you use voice, audio is processed by ElevenLabs to power the conversation. We don't keep recordings.
How we use it
To run the Service: remembering where you are in a book, gating spoilers, generating Bemis's responses (your messages and book context are sent to our AI providers to produce replies), sending transactional email via Resend (sign-in links, receipts, club activity you opt into).
We do not sell personal data, and we don't use your conversations to advertise to you.
Who touches your data
Supabase (database and authentication), Stripe (payments), Resend (email), OpenAI (discussion responses), ElevenLabs (voice), and Vercel (hosting). Each receives only what it needs to do its job.
Clubs are shared spaces
Messages you post in a club are visible to its members. Your chapter progress is visible to club members so spoiler-gating works. Public clubs are visible to any signed-in reader.
Your rights
You can export or delete your data at any time from your account page, or by contacting us. Deleting your account removes your profile, shelves, and conversations. Depending on where you live (GDPR, CCPA), you may have additional rights — we honor access, correction, and deletion requests for everyone regardless.
Retention and security
We keep your data while your account is active. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our infrastructure providers. No system is perfect; if a breach affects you, we'll tell you promptly.
Children
Bemis is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes materially, we'll email you first. Questions or requests: the contact page is read by a human.
